TPS Granted to Venezuelans until March 2024

TPS Protections

Temporary Protected Status gives foreign nationals who are from a country affected by violence, natural disasters, or any other form of a humanitarian crisis, the opportunity to safely reside in the United States without the fear of deportation. Individuals in the United States under TPS may legally work and study in the United States and may even travel in and out of the U.S. if they apply for the proper travel permits ahead of time.

Recently, the Biden administration has extended TPS protections to Venezuelan nationals residing in the United States since March 8^th, 2021. Venezuelan nationals who are eligible for TPS may stay safe and live in the United States until March 2024.

It should be noted, that those Venezuelan nationals who have entered the United States since March 8^th, 2021 will not be eligible for Temporary Protected Status. It is estimated that around 340,000 Venezuelan nationals in the United States are eligible for this TPS extension.

Crisis in Venezuela

Due to food and medicine scarcity, escalating violence, and political uncertainty, millions of Venezuelans have been forced to flee their native country. It is estimated by the United Nations, that nearly 6 million Venezuelan nationals have fled the country due to human rights abuses and various economic and political crises under President Nicolas Maduro.

Many Venezuelans have fled to neighboring Latin American countries as well as the Caribbean. Due to travel restrictions preventing them from obtaining visas to fly to Mexico and other Central American counties, more and more Venezuelan nationals are crossing the Darien Gap, a dense and dangerous jungle between Colombia and Panama, on their way north.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection authorities have reported nearly 100,000 migrant encounters with nationals from Venezuela since October 2021. These encounters have already doubled from the previous year demonstrating that more refugees from Venezuela are seeking entry or asylum in the United States.
