UK Student Visa Extension

Many US citizens choose to study at one of the UK’s numerous world-class universities. In most cases, Americans studying in the UK will require a valid Student visa.

If your current Student visa does not cover the entire duration of your studies, you will need to apply for a visa extension before your current visa expires. Alternatively, if you are planning on starting a new course in the UK after completion of your current course, you will also generally need to apply for a visa extension. However, submitting a new visa application can often be complicated, with multiple criteria to satisfy. At IAS, we can assist with the entire process, ensuring it runs as smoothly as possible. Extend Your Student Visa in UK

If you are in the UK on a Student visa and your visa is set to expire before the end of your studies then you will need to apply for a visa extension. You will also need to apply for a visa extension if you wish to continue studying in the UK on a new course after completing your current course.

In general, you can remain in the UK on a Student visa for up to 5 years. You may also be eligible to remain in the UK on a Graduate visa after completing your studies, which allows you to remain in the UK for another 18 months to 3 years, depending on your particular degree and date of application.

UK Student visas do not provide a direct route to British permanent settlement. However, you may eventually be able to settle in the UK after completing your studies if you successfully find UK employment and live and work in the UK for a sufficient period of time, generally 5 years.

Eligibility Criteria for Student Visa Extension

When applying to extend your Student visa, there are a number of eligibility criteria which you will need to satisfy. These are as follows:

    • You must be in the UK on either a Student visa or a Tier 4 (General) Student visa
    • You must have an unconditional offer of study from an eligible educational institution. You will need to provide a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies as evidence of this
    • If you are extending your visa in order to begin studying on a new course, you will generally need to demonstrate that the new course involves academic progress (e.g. if you are moving from a Bachelor’s to a Master’s)
    • If you have been in the UK on a visa for under 12 months, you will also need to demonstrate that you have the financial means to support yourself and any dependants)

How to Apply for UK Student Visa Extension?

When applying to extend your Student visa, you can submit the application online, via the UK government website. You will need to provide evidence that you have an eligible offer of study and, if applicable, that your new course is of a higher academic level than your previous course and that you have the means to financially support yourself during your studies.

As part of the extension application process, you will also need to verify your identity. You will be asked to do this either via the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app, which will allow you to scan your ID, or at a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) service point. These can be found throughout the UK, including in London, Bristol, Exeter, Nottingham, Liverpool, Cardiff, Glasgow, Inverness, and Edinburgh.

Once you have submitted your application, it will then be processed. If your application is successful, you will be granted a new visa and will be able to legally remain in the UK.

Which Documents Will I Require for UK Student Visa Extension?

When applying to extend a UK Student visa you will need to provide a range of documentation in support of your application. This generally includes the following:

      • Proof of identity
      • Proof that you can support yourself for the duration of your studies (if applicable)
      • Proof that your new course is of a higher academic level than your previous course (if you are extending your Student visa in order to study on a new course)
      • A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), demonstrating that you have an unconditional offer to study in the UK at an eligible educational institution

For more information on the documents which you will need in support of your application and on which educational courses are eligible, contact IAS today.

Application Cost for UK Student Visa Extension

When applying to extend your Student visa, you will be required to pay an application fee of £558. This fee must also be paid by any dependants of yours who are also applying to extend their visas.

You will also generally need to pay the immigration health surcharge, which allows you to access the National Health Service (NHS). This generally costs £776 per year.

      Application Processing Time

Once your application has been submitted, you will then need to wait for it to be processed. In general, you should receive a decision on your application within 8 weeks.

In order to avoid delays, you should make sure to promptly provide any additional information which is requested in support of your application. For example, you may be asked to attend an interview or to provide further documentation. Providing this information as quickly as possible can help to minimise the waiting time.

Switching to a Graduate Visa in UK

Upon completing your studies in the UK, you may be eligible to switch to a Graduate visa. This will allow you to extend your time in the UK.

In order to be eligible for the Graduate visa, you will need to satisfy the following criteria:

        • You are still be in the UK at the point of application
        • You have completed your course and the Home Office has been informed of your course completion by your educational provider
        • You are graduating from a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or PhD/doctorate, or one of the following:
          • A law conversion course (which is approved by the Solicitors Regulation Authority)
          • The Legal Practice Course (England and Wales), Solicitors Course (Northern Ireland), or a Diploma in Professional Legal Practice (Scotland)
          • The Bar Practice Course (England and Wales) or Bar Course (Northern Ireland)
          • A Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)

In order to be eligible for the Graduate visa, you will also need to have studied in the UK for a sufficient period of time before graduating. If your course is over a year long then you will need to have studied in the UK for at least 12 months. If your course is under a year long then you will need to have studied in the UK for the entire duration of your course.

Successfully obtaining a UK Graduate visa will allow you to live and work in the UK even after your Student visa has expired. If you apply for your Graduate visa on or before the 31st December 2026, you will generally be able to live and work in the UK for an additional 2 years. If you apply after the 1st January 2027, however, this reduces to 18 months.

If you graduated with a PhD or equivalent then your Graduate visa will allow you to remain in the UK for 3 years.

Note that you will need to apply for your Graduate visa before your Student visa expires in order to maintain legal immigration status within the UK.

For more information on the UK Graduate visa, contact IAS today.

        Applying with Dependants

If you have been joined in the UK by immediate family members who are accompanying you as your dependants, it is likely that they will also be able to extend their visas, provided that you yourself are still eligible to remain in the country. However, your dependants will need to submit separate applications and will need to do so before the expiry of their own visas.

Your dependants will generally be given permission to remain in the UK for the same duration as your own visa.

Note that the majority of international students in the UK are not eligible to be joined by their dependants. In order to be eligible, you will need to fall into one of the following 2 categories:

        • A government-sponsored student taking a course which is longer than 6 months
        • A full-time postgraduate student (studying either a PhD/doctorate or a research-based higher degree)

In turn, the family members who you wish to join you as your dependants must fall into one of the following categories:

        • Spouse or unmarried partner
        • Minor children

Undergraduate international students in the UK will not generally be able to be joined by their dependants.

Post-Study Work Options in the UK

After completing your degree, there are a couple of main routes to remaining in the UK for work.

In general, you will need to apply for a Work visa in order to remain in the UK after your Student visa has expired. If you already have a job offer from a UK company which is a licenced visa sponsor then you may be eligible to apply for a Skilled Worker visa. In order to follow this route, you will need to satisfy a number of eligibility criteria, including the following:

        • Having an offer for a job which is on the list of eligible occupations
        • Having a certificate of sponsorship (CoS) from your prospective employer
        • Having a salary offer which satisfies the minimum salary requirements (this varies depending on the role in question)

In the event that you do not currently have a job offer, applying for a Graduate visa is likely to be your best route to remaining in the UK for work. The details of this visa are given earlier in this article.

          Settling Permanently in the UK

Studying in the UK does not provide a direct route to UK permanent settlement. However, it can sometimes provide an indirect route.

If you receive a job offer in the UK after graduating and you successfully obtain an eligible Work visa then you may eventually be able to obtain permanent settlement status, known in the UK as ‘indefinite leave to remain’. In general, you will need to live and work in the UK continuously for at least 5 years on an eligible visa, such as the Skilled Worker visa, before becoming eligible for permanent settlement status.

After having indefinite leave to remain for at least a year, you will then generally be able to apply for UK citizenship status. This provides access to a range of benefits, including the ability to participate in UK elections and to apply for a British passport.

                    Frequently Asked Questions

In general, you can stay in the UK on a Student visa for up to 5 years. However, after graduating, you may be able to switch to a Graduate visa, the details of which are given in the main article. This visa allows you to live and work in the UK for an additional 18 months to 3 years, depending on your particular degree level and when you apply.

If your UK Student visa expires and is not replaced with another valid visa then you will no longer have permission to remain in the UK and will be expected to voluntarily leave the country. If you wish to apply for another UK visa then you will need to first return to your country of origin/citizenship and apply from there.

If you remain in the UK after your visa expires then you will no longer have legal permission to be in the UK and will be vulnerable to deportation. This is also likely to impact your ability to obtain future UK visas.
