USA and the UK
Joe Biden has paused construction on the US-Mexico border wall, that was one of Trump’s most controversial immigration policies.
Just hours after being sworn in as president, Biden ordered a review of the walls funding and it’s contracts. Previously, critics claimed that the anti-immigrant structure was a waste of tax payers money.
The executive order that was used to pause border wall construction said:
“Like every nation, the United States has a right and a duty to secure its borders and protect its people against threats. But building a massive wall that spans the entire southern border is not a serious policy solution…It is a waste of money that diverts attention from genuine threats to our homeland security.”
It’s estimated that wall has cost billions of dollars, costing $20 million per mile. Now, the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security and the Office of Management and Budget must halt the construction of the border wall as well as review the legality of funding and contracting methods that have been used to build the wall.
The pause on construction of the border wall is just one of the many ways that Biden has been taking action on his promise to reverse the Trump administration’s draconian immigration laws, that included deporting unaccompanied migrant children.
