B1/B2 Visa Renewal in 2026
A B1/B2 Visa is a non-immigrant, multiple-entry visa to the United States that combines two visitor visa categories–category B-1 for business purposes and category B-2 for tourism and recreational purposes. The B1/B2 allows the holder to temporarily stay in the US, after which it can be renewed.
If you are a foreign citizen in the US on a B-1/B-2 Visa that needs renewal, IAS can guide you through the process. Talk to our team at +1 844 290 6312 or use our online chat.
Am I Eligible to Renew My US B1/B2 Visa?
You are eligible to renew your B1/B2 Visa if your previous visa expired within the last 48 months and the current purpose of your visit aligns with B-1 or B-2 Visa categories. You can apply for a visa renewal from your home country, but make sure you haven’t had a recent visa application rejected by the US Embassy since this may impact the success of your visa application.
Additionally, your application would be rejected if your intended purpose for travel has changed. For example, if you initially traveled for vacation but now wish to engage in studies or long-term employment in the US.
Depending on your nationality, there may be exceptions to general eligibility criteria, so you should discuss your situation with a qualified immigration expert.

Documents Required for US B1/B2 Visa Renewal
The documents required when applying for a renewal are similar to the initial B1/B2 Visa application. The necessary documents include the following:
- A passport valid for at least six months after the intended period of stay in the US
- Recent color passport photographs
- Copies of any previous visas
- Printout of the DS-160 confirmation page (The confirmation page appears once you fill and submit the DS-160 application form online).
- Visa renewal fee payment receipt
Depending on the type of visa you wish to renew, you may have to submit additional documents, such as evidence of the purpose of your trip, your ability to support your trip financially, and when you plan to depart the US.

How to Apply for US B1/B2 Visa Renewal
Overview
When renewing your visa, you have to go through all the steps you initially went through when applying for your B1/B2 Visa. Though there are several steps, the order of these steps often varies.
For instance, in the Philippines, you pay the visa renewal fee before completing the application form and entering the interview, whereas in India, you only have to pay the visa renewal fee after scheduling the interview.
Complete the DS-160 Form Online
Once you ensure you meet all the eligibility criteria for renewing the B1/B2 Visa, including having a visa that expired within the last 48 months, the next step is to complete the DS-160 form.
The application form can be filled out online for all non-immigrant visas and visa renewals through the Consular Electronic Application Center. You also have to upload your photo while completing this form.
After submitting the form, a confirmation page will appear. You must print this page and bring it along with all the other documents to the interview.
Schedule an Interview Appointment
Next, you must schedule an appointment with the US Embassy or Consulate in your country by visiting their website. While this isn’t mandatory, scheduling an interview at another US Embassy or Consulate may make it difficult to qualify for the renewal.
There are certain exceptions to this, and a few people are eligible for B1/B2 Visa renewal without an interview. Children aged 13 or younger and adults 80 or older generally don’t require an interview.
Wait times for interview appointments vary based on the season, location, and visa category. It is always good to apply for your visa renewal early. Also, ensure all sections of the DS-160 form were completed accurately and you have all the required documents since even a minor error can lead to refusal.

Paying the US B1/B2 Visa Renewal Fee
The visa renewal fee is non-refundable and should often be paid before your interview. The payment receipt should then be printed and saved for reference. However, in some countries, you are allowed to pay this application fee at the time of your interview or after scheduling your interview.
The fee is $185 for a non-petition-based non-immigrant visa. You can pay it in cash at a bank or the embassy when appearing for the interview or use a debit card to pay online.

US B1/B2 Visa Renewal Interview
Before the interview, you are must submit all the required documents for visa renewal. There are three ways to go about this. First, you submit the documents and attend the interview on different days. Second, you submit the documents at the US embassy on the day of your interview. And third, you submit the documents at a Visa Application Center and then attend the interview at the US Embassy. So, depending on your situation, you might need two different appointments–one for documentation and another for the interview.
During the interview, a consular officer will ask you questions that will help them decide whether you’re eligible for a B1/B2 Visa. This can include questions about why you’re renewing your visa, previous US visits, travel itinerary, and information about your family, job, salary, and relationships.
In addition to questions, you will also be asked to provide biometric data, such as ink-free digital fingerprint scans.
After the interview, the consular office will decide whether or not your application requires further administrative processing, and they will inform you about this as well. If your visa renewal application gets approved, you will be asked to pay a visa issuance fee.
US B1/B2 Visa Renewal Interview Waiver
The US Interview Waiver Program (IWP) allows certain applicants to renew their B1/B2 Visa without attending an in-person interview at the US embassy or consulate. You may qualify for B1/B2 Visa renewal without an interview if:
- You’re below 14 or above 79
- Your previous visa expired within the past 48 months
- You’ve not had a recent visa application denial
- Your previous visa was a full-validity, multiple-entry visa
- The purpose of the visit and other relevant circumstances are unchanged from the previous visa application
In case you meet all the criteria above, you can simply submit your documents at the Visa Application Center or the Embassy and then wait for the outcome. Want to know if you are eligible for an interview waiver? Talk to our immigration lawyers today.
How Long Does the US B1/B2 Visa Renewal Process Take?
Like any other visa application, the processing time for B1/B2 Visa renewal is hard to predict and can take anywhere from a few days to a few months. Additionally, the consulate where you’re applying, the time of the year, and the embassy official’s workload affect the visa processing time. In some cases, you will be informed of the outcome of your application as soon as the interview ends. In other cases, you will have to wait several days before hearing the results.

What Is the Validity of a Renewed US B1/B2 Visa?
The consular officer determines the validity period of the renewed B1/B2 Visa based on factors such as your unique situation, the purpose of travel, ties to the home country, etc. Generally, it will have the same validity and conditions as your expired visa, allowing for multiple entries for a period of 10 years.
What if Your US B1/B2 Visa Renewal Application Is Denied?
In case of rejection, the US Consular Services will notify you about it, along with the reason for the rejection. Incomplete documentation is one of the main reasons for denial. Furthermore, past criminal records or suspicions about the applicant’s intent can lead to rejection.
Entering the United States after B1/B2 Visa Renewal
A renewed B1/B2 Visa serves as a port of entry that allows you to travel to the US. However, it is generally a request for permission and doesn’t guarantee entry into the US. Ultimately, the decision as to whether or not to let you into the country rests on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials.
Upon being granted permission to enter the US, the CBP official will stamp your passport or provide an Arrival/Departure Record (Paper Form I-94).
Extending Your Stay After B1/B2 Visa Renewal
If you wish to extend your stay in the US after entering the country on a renewed B1/B2 Visa, you must submit a request to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This involves completing Form I-539, aka Application to Extend/Change Non-Immigrant Status. The application should be submitted at least 45 days before your authorized stay expires. The expiry date can be found in the lower right corner of your Form I-94.
Failure to extend your visa or depart the US on time might lead to you being out of status and being forced to return to your home country. It can also have a significant impact on future immigration plans.

Frequently Asked Questions
You can apply at the US embassy or the US consulate to renew your US Visa in Nigeria. The renewal process is similar to the initial visa application process and involves completing an application form, submitting the required documents, and paying the application fee.
Renewing your visa allows you to stay in a foreign country under the same classification as your initial visa and will have the same validity. On the other hand, a visa extension lets you stay in the country a little longer before returning to your homeland.
