Immigration and the 2014 Football World Cup
As the final of the 2014 Football World Cup looms this evening, there is no denying that the competition this time around has cast a spotlight on the positives of immigration. Here, we take a closer look into the immigration history of the German national football team, one of this evening’s World Cup finalists who will either emerge as the victors or runners up after this evening’s deciding match. There has been a wealth of publicity surrounding the German national team in particular throughout this year’s World Cup, as it seems that many of their star players originate from beginnings external to Germany. During the 2010 World Cup, as many as 11 of the 24 players on the Germany team were of immigrant origins.
